Hansen’s class presented Jim Thorpe’s Shoes, and Sun Ra Angel Race. Walker’s class featured: Maya Angelou, American memorist, poet, and civil rights activist, and Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese contemporary multi-media artist who worked primarily in sculpture and installation, and is considered “the world’s most successful living artist.” In six parts, each class presented two vignettes on famous artists of color. The other big news is that our 4th grade production of Their Stories Must Be Told was a great success! The whole school saw the performance at 1:30, and a packed house thoroughly enjoyed the evening show. This is a proven strategy, and I am excited to see the resulting student growth. To keep students focused and doing their best work, our third grade team is having students only do ten problems at a time. Spring diagnostic MAP testing, which is useful because it measures individual student growth in reading and math, is underway. She was very engaging, drew on the spot requests, and her latest book Shark Princess has proved very successful! We encourage families to continue to play and gather on the lower playground and field areas during this time as it is also a great space. By limiting access to the playground, we can ensure that our afterschool programs have the space and resources they need to run smoothly and effectively. We understand that this may be an inconvenience for families who use the upper playground after school to socialize and play, but we believe that this change is necessary in order to provide the best possible experience for our afterschool program participants. If you are one of the many families who meet your student(s) on the upper playground after school pickup we ask that you please move promptly to the lower playground. The upper playground will remain closed until 5:30pm. Starting Wednesday, May 10, the upper playground will only be available for use by our afterschool program participants from 3:00pm-5:30pm.
